Sweden moving in the direction of the right wing

I agree, but at the moment we've effectively closed the door because who the hell gets a plane from outside the EU to Ireland?
Entirely necessary imo.

The we need workers spiel is a nonsense as well spouted by the reprehensible hospitality industry etc who want to keep on treating their employees like shit while claiming tax breaks and price gouging to beat the band.
Also all the Ukrainian women are already starting to move into the hospitality sector and in a few years their kids will start to look for employment as well.

The construction industry isn't short workers, it's short materials and affordable projects. Until that is fixed then it will remain stagnant. If the jobs were there at good wages the young wouldn't be leaving or planning to leave in droves.

Widespread Skills Shortages

Construction companies are facing significant recruitment challenges, which – along with inflation – are limiting their performance. Nearly two thirds (63%) of construction companies are struggling to recruit the talent they need.

Most professionals put the recruitment challenge down to a lack of skilled labour generally (59%) or not being able to find people with the skills needed (43%). But inflation is clearly playing a role; one in ten say that a major factor behind the skills shortage is the cost of living diverting people from construction to other sectors.

RTE
Nearly two thirds of construction companies here are finding it difficult to recruit skilled workers, according to a survey of over 300 firms here conducted by Core Research on behalf of software firm, Autodesk.

They put the difficulty down to a lack of career options and negative perceptions about working in the industry, as well as what many believe to be an exodus of young talent from the country.

Two in five firms say they are actively recruiting.

Despite the recruitment challenges, the mood of the industry is seen as mainly positive for this year.

38% of companies surveyed expect revenue to increase with just one in ten expecting to see a decrease.

However, labour shortage and access to talent are expected to impact Ireland's ability to achieve its housing ambitions.

"This report reveals the high availability of construction jobs in the marketplace but exposes the lack of access to a skilled workforce and the limitations that shortage is putting on the future potential of the construction industry," Brian Roche, Construction Sales Lead at Autodesk Ireland said.

Lack of workers + materials and energy input costs inflation and unattractiveness in the industry = perfect storm of undeliverable housing targets no matter who is in power.

There's your reason m8. Shit jobs, shit wages, no future.
Young people are fucking off to Australia to work in the construction industry there.
Meanwhile our construction industry is blaming skill shortages while making a tidy profit :lol!:

Ah c'mon Stacky, we are swamped. If we weren't, PUIC wouldn't be need to house refugees. Hotels would be available in Ireland at reasonable prices.
I wouldn't bet on it m8.
Remember the first summer after Covid when we all holidayed at home and got gouged on prices.
The same pricks want us to let in more people from Asia etc to work for peanuts to drive their profits even higher.

Meanwhile the Danes are exporting their asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Be interesting to see how that goes down with their fellow EU countries. When Boris wanted to do that he was branded a nutcase, racist and xenophobic.

That was a temporary war situation issue.

This time next year most of these people could well be back in Ukraine.

Hotels in the cities (esp Dublin) rip everyone off due to high demand and lack of affordable supply.

Likewise in housing we have a poor planning system, huge shortage of skilled labour to even build never mind do all the retrofitting, massive demand for homes, increasing cost of materials, increased borrowing costs, Irish Water etc not providing utilities, hapless local authorities, An Bord Pleanala fock knows what is going on there, politicians demanding houses while objecting to new homes, buildings and quay walls falling down in the city and no enforcement, massive vacancy and dereliction, no land tax and a local authority (s) permanently asleep at the wheel.

I have no idea but the whole system looks fairly focked to me.

Yeah can't see that going ahead.

Denmark along with Sweden are seriously toughening up on immigration

'The Danish immigration minister Kaare Dybvad Bek wants to ensure that anyone without permanent residency or citizenship in Denmark would be deported if given an unconditional prison sentence.

“If you have committed very violent crime or are a violent criminal or rapist, you should not be allowed to stay in Denmark if you do not have permanent residency or are not a citizen,” Bek told news wire Ritzau'.

Deportation of those without citizenship or permanent residency who commit serious crimes sounds like a perfectly reasonable policy tbh.

Oh I know that but surely if we have to put them in a sports stadium, we have a problem and have taken too many in and can't cope. Other temporary refugee accommodation is swamped because we are a soft touch and have nefarious cases (some here with appeals in the system for years) taken spots that could have been used for Ukrainians.

I mentioned this before but new builds are zero rated for VAT in the UK. Is it the same here? Something to look at if not.
