The best advice for that is, as soon as you think you need to change lanes, indicate at that point, because generally what happens is that the car behind you in that lane will, either speed up (to cut you off and get ahead of you) or ease off on the accelerator to let you in. Those two scenarios, in my experience, are more likely than the driver not reacting at all.
