Stuff that grinds your gears

People who sit in their cars outside schools with the engine idling while waiting to collect their sprogs really annoy me, I notice it more among women, I presume the idea is to keep the heater on to keep warm, either way they are inconsiderate asshats.
Women at my son’s preschool leave by car idling as they walk in to collect them. I’ve often been tempted to switch the engine off but I don’t want to be CyclingMikey dickhead.

A random one and one which has no impact on me at all but...

The hours we expect teenagers to put in from junior cert year through to leaving cert.

About:
30hours of class time
10-12 hours homework
15 hours study

So a continuous expectation of around 55 hours work per week (recommended over 6 days when breaking down the "study" hours). This is something which would be considered illegal in the workplace.
Teens... undeveloped teens, with an expectation of zero ability to "switch-off" from their expected work over a 6 day rolling shift pattern?
We need to cop the fuck on with how we are approaching education and the burden we are placing on kids.

On top of that we then complain that they are fat and lazy because the participation numbers in sports keeps dropping.

Are those hours correct though in reality. I'd wager it's less than that for a lot of students.

If there are students doing those kind of hours I hear it from parents that they want to do it themselves. A lot of parents don't really put a whole lot of pressure on their kids as long as they do their best and as much as they feel they can do. This is what I hear anyway.

I don't know much about participation in sports dropping barr that the kids that are involved in sports, it's their parents are constantly on the road which actually has the parents under immense pressure, especially when both parents are working.

Some kids would have no bother spending that time on phones, tablets, and social media.

Where did you get those numbers out of interest?

We are not at this point yet but its on the horizon, there is no way I would want or expect my kids to study for 2-3 hours per day after already doing 2 hours of homework. Everything in life needs a balanced approach, that leaves little or no time for anything else they should be doing.. sports, hanging out with friends, watching a movie, whatever - all of those things are just as important as any of the school stuff

There is no way either of mine will be undertaking anything like that, I certainly didn't when it was my go but remember the LC cycle as the absolute worst time of my life. I got out ok but wouldn't project it onto any other child, although schooling has certainly moved on a lot since then.

That's a fair point.
Is it though?

I've never bothered with SM so certainly not pushing it for a second, but if thats what a child wants to do to forget about school for a while or communicate with their friends then it is at least getting them away from school work and the stresses and strains of the whole thing before it starts again the next morning. Obviously my preference would be that my own kids use the time to take part in sport or hobbies, or meet their friends or whatever.. anything to make sure they are getting a mental rest each day
