I'd like to compare Collins to Assad.

Collins signed the treaty with the Brits and as a result it led to a civil war & his assassination, it would also lead to partition and, eventually, the Troubles in the North, not until the Good Friday Agreement would peace come. It was Dev, Reynolds, Hume, Adams & Bertie that would reconcile the crisis on the island.

Now take Pres Assad, he refused to make peace with the Zionist state which led to the West fighting a war with his country for 14 years until he was removed from power but the country remained unified, the Golan continued to be recognised as part of the country & he never had to sign a humiliating treaty with Tel Aviv that would be seen as betraying the Palestinians.
