Knowing that the article is 4 years old, we can look back with hindsight that what sounded interesting turned out to be hollow. Sinn Fein are naive to think they can flick a switch and have unionists work with them. They had already wasted 25 years by 2022 in not building trust with unionists, so it wasn't just the 30 years of a conflict, but then followed it with 25+ years of obstructionism and goading. I thought this was particularly on point....
I know Michelle’s article is 4 years old and in a way, that’s kinda my point!
Here’s my reasoning for this,
This is from the article and I quote,
“People in Northern Ireland are currently not waking up thinking about Irish unity, Sinn Féin deputy leader Michelle O’Neill has said.
Ms O’Neill said that while there would come a day when people would vote on Northern Ireland’s constitutional future, their focus today is on the cost-of-living crisis.”
Given that the cost of living crisis hasn’t exactly gone away I’m sure that Michelle has the same opinion now than she had back then!
Here’s the full article,
People are not waking up thinking about Irish unity, says O’Neill
Opinion poll in Northern Ireland found fewer than one in three would vote for unification
