The communities were under direct attack from Loyalist thugs so yes they sought protection by joining the IRA they had a right to defend themselves when nobody was coming in to help them, you have no right calling those people scum for that. Now did the IRA commit atrocities? Yes, they did but at the root of the conflict was the thuggery and discrimination being perpetrated by the British & loyalist forces.
