Sinn Fein are not a Normal Political Party

SF are portraying themselves as the party of change, the party who will deliver us a different type of government to the 100 years of FF/FG as they say, for that matter they may want to look at why voters didn't vote for their brand of change in that 100 years especially the period from the 70's to 2000.
It's deflection or even whataboutery in a way but also legitimate a d has substance to see how SF govern in the north , the pouches is one comparison although it is a DUP/SF powersharing gov they still pilot a scheme which if rolled out will cost NI 5 million sterling.twice as many schools here and 9m.
I doubt it very much when reflecting on the state of the UK economy that the pouch scheme will be further rolled out in NI.

This thread is become hilarious. Imagine teachers not being able to make rules and control their classrooms.
If they can’t stop kids using their phones in class, then they shouldn’t be teaching. Simple as.
Every child in secondary has a locker, if a school can’t make them leave their phone there why do people think they are going to be able to make them use a pouch.
An absolutely ridiculous waste of 9m

100% this.
It's a parenting and teaching responsibility.
Phones only for emergencies during the day.
It's smacks of spending to be seen to be spending, an idea out of a PR think tank.

re your questions, I don't believe the spending of 9m on pouches is pointless, have a daughter who is a teacher and she says phone use is rife despite best efforts at control, ,breaks concentration and at break times ,kids just sit around glued to phones.first years especially who may not even know someone in their classes are Isolated and find themselves socially excluded .do I think 9m is excessive cost and could it be spent in a better way ,of course yes but there are always choices with funding and I think this is a worthwhile path to try.
Your other question
Yes I do have family and friends affected by funding in lots of ways including education ,I'd imagine most people do .
Valid thanks for answering, it's great to have a debate without people getting personal etc.

I do think 9 million is a huge waste personally and as you point I've friends and family who teach be it primary or secondary and they're mixed about it.
They do acknowledge it's rife and there needs to be more done but they also see the budget/funding cuts - there's 2 or 3 still not on permanent contracts and it's due to the school saying 'we might not have the funding after this year to keep you on', they feel its a massive overspend on something that can be patrolled by teachers and more discipline from principals.
They also say the issue is lack of support from parents that when and if a phone is taken the parents are down at the office saying 'My Johnny wasn't on his phone and you have no right to keep it for a week'

I personally believe that once you pay the contribution or sign the discipline policy you agree fully with the phone policy that if caught it's taken for a week or whatever it might be or that the student is suspended for 2 days.
Regardless of what parents say the teachers and principal pull out the policy and say you signed this and agreed so no we will not be overturning the punishment.

I have friends in schools that are trialing it and they say kids are already finding flaws in the system such as bring in a 2nd phone to put in pouch and keep the other phone on person.

I have given govt credit for free books and free lunches and breakfasts but id sooner see more of that money go to kids with special needs, many families can well afford books,
Agreed. I'm not sure the free books is a good measure to be honest. There's little respect for something that comes free and no reason why those than can afford shouldn't pay for books.

I'm not a big fan of fee paying schools but I'd look at a parent spending money on their child's education with a lot more respect than those that go out to buy their kids the latest and greatest gadgets l, fashion trend etc.

Simon Harris says MLMD normally has an opinion on everything but she has gone to ground on the McMonagle situation,
Radio silence for the past 48 hours as they search the closet again for yet more skeletons.

"Lessons will have been learned" speech to get another play very shortly from Mary Lou.

The whole mcmonagle story reflects very badly on SF and their child safety structures. Also it is scarcely believable that Michelle o Neill didn't see Mcmonagle who was standing a few feet away from her. Radio silence from the head of SF mary lou Mcdonald too does not portray to the public that they have taken this issue seriously. Poor judgement all around and you cannot have that when dealing with issues like this .
