What I wouldn't do in that situation though, is vilify the young trans person. Because that is an extremely shitty way to treat any vulnerable person, and also because it would be an extremely shitty example to set for my kids.

It's not a young trans person!!! You don't jump to that based on an announcement from a confused kid. It's likely a cry for help or attention.

What is the kids home situation like? Are they autistic? How is their mental health? Have they seen a councilor? How much time are they spending online? Who are they following online? What rabbit hole have they gone down? How are they socially? Do they have friends? What are the friends like? Are the friends obsessed with this gender ideology as well? Are they being bullied or excluded?

Hundreds of questions you could ask to find out why this poor kid is so unhappy and to help them if you actually wanted to be kind but no choose the route where you confirm the most notion that will screw up their life the most.

How would it in any way be appropriate for me to ask such questions about a stranger? In this ( entirely made up) scenario, this person is a class mate of my child, yet you expect me to interrogate them about their entire life. Do you genuinely think that's a reasonable way for an adult stranger to interact with a young person?
