September 11th 2001

I was working a summer job in a cardboard box factory

There were 2 full time staff and 3 or 4 hired guns Brought in to full full contracts.

The 2 full time fellas were sound but not exactly the most career driven go getters you'd get posting here.

They'd have Neil flaking away (tee hee hee) on the radio all morning, there was some hassle with a shop front of some Nigerian owned shop getting its windows kicked in the night previous and Neil was going hard at the racial angle. News started to filter in about the towers and it was like Neil didn't realise how big it was.

Stuck to his guns, Mentioned it a couple of times as a developing story but stayed with his "Race Riot" lede

The two boys were straight within about 5 mins were like "that'll be that Bin Laden fella"
I had never heard of him before, this was pre smart phones Internet was only just moving behind dial up but the lads could tell me he was on the FBI moat wanted, he was living in Saudi and was probably the mastermind of the whole thing.

I also remeber on the national day of mourning the only shop that was open was Shalom Stores in Jewtown. and literally every business owner in the country bitching about people getting a day off
Pubs in Lisdoonvarna and Doolin were open that day. That day of mourning was a stupid idea anyway.

I was sitting in the living room of the gaff that I was renting at the time.

The news was on. Myself and my housemate were watching it, slightly agog.

My housemates' girlfriend walked in, saw the towers on fire and asked "What are ye watching?"

Without blinking an eye he replied to her;

"Independence Day 2".

I was in Chicago that day working in a high rise in a cube with a corner window view. I was in some stupid three hour phone meeting and only heard of people in the office talking about it quietly.

After the meeting was over, I found out what was going on. The second tower had already fallen. Being the we were in a big insurance company, there was a lot of managerial agony about letting people leave early. Finally, in late morning/early afternoon they were allowed. I was standing in the window at the time. Suddenly, my building and the surrounding high rises disgorged many hundreds of people who headed to the large train stations to the west of the Loop.

I didn’t, thinking that if terrorists were killing people, the crowded train stations would be a perfect place to do it. I waited for three or four hours. When I left, the downtown was almost empty. Almost everything was closed. Except one hot dog place. I still remember walking by it seeing a worker eating a very sloppy hot dog while staring at the sky, waiting for planes.

RTE going full tilt today

Were these the only set of keys? Also, that very annoying pixie sounding motherfucker in the north west asked John Kerry where he was when “the tower hit the plane” on the one o’clock news.

Yerah fuck it, we got a day off and the publicans in West Clare made fucking bank

not so stupid after all.
A day off to pray or do f all. If you were in Cork, pubs in Clare wouldn't have been much use to you unless you flew up but with the Yanks in red alert probably not a good idea.

I was working for a yank, and as news broke we all ended up gathering around a table listening to the bulletins. My bosses brother was to be in the second tower I think for a meeting that morning and he could not get contact with him or his family there as all of the phone systems were jammed. I’ll never forget the fear on his face as he stood there crying thinking his brother was probably dead but not able to verify anything. It turned out that his brothers meeting had been rescheduled and he was alive but I think it was the next day before he found out

My missus was in NY for the summer on a J1 when it happened.. mad times

i know à lad sho was there on the j1 at the same time. he’d often show up in the pub with a bit of rubble he says he recovered from ground zero. tbh, the same lad was completely full of shit so i’d have my doubts.

i’d say no civilian could get within as ass’ roar of that place för months afterwards.
