I had to stop there on Sunday night coming home from the Bruce concert at Slane in1985 due to a problem with the car. There was a mechanic open so we had to wait in a pub. The locals were unfriendly yokels. It seemed that Cork was another planet to the muckers!
Took this guy.. an INLA member… 20 years to get deported. He had convictions in NI from 1981 and wasn’t deported until 2020. The Irish American lobby is powerful, primarily Trump voters, and even if this guy Culleton committed offenses in Ireland, and undocumented for years, it’s not a slam dunk that he’ll be deported. Didn’t OJ get exonerated after murdering 2 people.. legal representation is everything!Thank you for providing this anecdote from 41 years ago. I'm sure it will be useful to anyone visiting Portlaoise soon
Malachy McAllister had an army of lawyers behind him, lived in New Jersey with American wife and kids, and fought deportation successfully for years. He had convictions for attacks on RUC and INLA membership. Culleton’s transgressions are trivial… although theoretically he broke the law by staying undocumented, he had been living a trouble free life for 20 years. If he had the money for lawyers, he won’t be deported!Took this guy.. an INLA member… 20 years to get deported. He had convictions in NI from 1981 and wasn’t deported until 2020. If I had to guess I'd say someone local fed Tull McAdoo this story. Its not something you'd happen upon.
It will be interesting to see how the journalists behind this story react.
I'd say not much has changed in Portlaoise since 1985.
Maybe a petrol station name. Perhaps there's a second dentist.
But not the mindset.

Was at a football game there in 2007. Not had any reason to set foot in the place since
