Save Cork City/Love the Lee

Am I right in saying that the primary goal of this lot was to stop the walls being built down by Morrisons Island and that area?

The walls look absolutely grand, were this crowd suggesting that they would somehow result in Cork City needing saving?

I notice they've been fairly absent throughout the whole construction process. I'd have expected a few of them to be hanging around and chaining themselves to railings etc.

Of what I saw of them it was made up of professionals over 60's. Aside from putting a car sticker on the back of their SUV's they didn't do a whole pile more.

Think they ran with the story that authorities were planning on building high flood-walls with the city which would prevent a view of the river and should it ever be over-topped it would retain water a lot longer within the city.

Don’t know if their campaigning changed things, or they were way off in the first place, but what’s on Morrisons Island now, as you say, looks good

They were advocating to change the plans the OPW had, so once they started building there was no more point

OPW have build flood walls to stop the flooding where it occurs, they had been suggesting a tidal barrier further downstream somewhere which would have given more scope for the city to have open spaces onto the river etc instead of blocking them off with walls. I have little understanding of the engineering specifics so no idea whether their proposals were a workable/affordable solution but if I was a betting man it wouldn't be the govt agency I'd be backing!

Walls will be about as useful as building walls on a sponge, or on a marsh, which what Cork is essentially. Water will find ways of seeping past all the hundreds, if not thousands of gaps. There's no way you're going to be able to seal it off.

Prepare for an expensive failure with no one accountable as per usual here.

As far as I know they were kind of infiltrated by a professional Crusty faction and it became a bit fractured after the fella Mick Ryan died in that plane crash in Africa.

I think their early proposals went above and beyond what could reasonably be expected from a group in civic society. They did not just complain they designed an alternative in the tidal barrier and went as far as get a feasibility study and outline design.

The big argument being that walls will disconnect the city from the lee and would be >250 points of failure. All it takes is for one fella to not fit the removable barriers at a ladder correctly and the water comes in, chances of it happening over the next 50 years or so are about 1 I'd say. While a tidal barrier would offer better protection with less impact on the city

Instead they argued we should try and use the river as a social amenity like other cities do. I agree with them to be honest.
