Rowing Thread

I wonder will the focus be the lightweights next week. The lack of info from Trish O'Donovan and the fleeting mentions of Dominic Casey in that article hinted there was more to come.

Overall I don't think there was much in that article. Anyone with half an interest in Irish Rowing knew Marogiovanni was a cnut. Rowing Ireland (and all high performance units) should have had more in place in terms of athlete welfare. That's the crux of it all.
Sport Ireland should probably have an athlete welfare officer overseeing all HP units. Independent from the sporting bodies and coaches involved.
Fuckit I dunno, Gary wasn't ever the engine in that boat. He would have said himself Paul was miles ahead in testing.

In 2016 Casey said that pretty much nobody in the squad could get near paul it was just him and Gary came out better in combination testing.

Fintan just got better than Gary.

It's not as if Gary didn't improve particularly in the single after Rio either, he had a load of injuries but still went from getting hammered un the C final of worlds in 2019 to finishing 4th in Euros in 2021 He just couldn't catch Fintan

Mairogiovanni got pretty much every selection bang on. Nobody in Irish rowing in 2017 would have even come close to predicting the level of success over the next seven years. Defo nobody would have dared predict Olympic medals at heavyweight.

If all of these athletes were being oppressed, they would not have performed as they did. Arguably the most important regatta during Maurogiovanni’s time was the World Championships in 2023 - because that delivered Olympic qualifying places in Paris. In that regatta-
- Ireland won 4 medals - 2 at heavyweight. These are world medals we’re talking about
-Ireland qualified a record 6 boats for the Olympics
- Every single Irish crew raced like demons - right in the mix coming to the line in every final - tactics and fitness were bang on

No question, the man appears to have been fairly unreconstructed and very much and ENTJ on his Myers-Briggs.

So far, we’ve heard from Dukarska and Puspure. As rebels says, there may be more but it doesn’t sound like it.

Don’t forget Puspure was leading the Olympics qualifier at Lucerne with 300m to go and all set for Paris when she steered into a buoy and stopped. That’s not Maurogiovanni’s fault.

Good fucking God. I mean there's TL;DR and then there's that!!! You'd want to be almost part of the set up to read all that.

"No, Paul, it's all good, no word limit, mate."

LOL,TLDR is right. So, having read almost all of it, it seems a number of non-selected athletes not selected took various degrees of formal complaint to Sport Ireland or Rowing Ireland. The authorities didn't agree but at the same time dropped Maurogiovanni when Brendan Griffin got involved. And Dominic Casey either is or isn't a bo***x.

Again, Kimmage represents Puspure's non-appearance at Paris as being down to non-selection -
"On July 5, 2024, three weeks before the Paris Olympics and a month after she learned she would not be there, Sanita Puspure sent a six-page letter to Michelle Carpenter, the high performance committee and the board at Rowing Ireland"
She was selected as the Irish entry, and led the qualification race until she stopped rowing after hitting a buoy. She "learned that she would not be there" out on the course by not podiumming in a race.

He manages to make Gary O'Donovan sound a like a complete PITA.

You're right though C., no word limit -
"John O’Dwyer was six years old when his father won his third All-Ireland. He was 12 when Kerry beat Dublin in 1975; 19 when they lost the five-in-a-row to Offaly; 30 when he became a solicitor; 48 when he founded Harrison O’Dwyer with Jean Harrison, and 58 when Monika Dukarska walked through the door of their branch in Killorglin."
So what?

There's a story in here alright, but Kimmage needs a serious referesher in journo school

Is that pile of bullshit really in the article? "So what?" is being kind, Terrier.

All that word count and all I want to hear about is Ronan Byrne telling them to get fucked, going on the piss somewhere down west and cracking his head open in a fall.

We all gotta blow of some steam every so often like
