Ronnie Delany RIP

Fantastic Piece from Mick Foley

How Ronnie Delany pushed against Ireland to become the greatest https://share.google/jbVfaACpyoJyLcuaU
That's brilliant.

His story was a vald experience for all elite athletes up to around 10 years ago, when some sports took it on themselves and tried to put development programs in place. Then the Sport Ireland takeover totally transformed the scene.

Foley captures the spirit of the time so well. My old man would have been a similar age to Delaney - and he certainly occasionally exhibited the symptoms of a man who came of age in that oppressive time. An extended peasant history, rigorus heirarchical control, emigration and widespread poverty sucked all the ambition out of so many of that generation. We came up in a much better time - under the eventual impact of Lemass, O'Malley, Whitaker and television, despite occasional waves of recession and emigration, we had it so much better.
