Ronnie Delaney is obviously up there in the mix

As well as the Olympic medal he was a 4-time NCAA champion for Villanova,

He won the Mile in back-to-back years (1957, 1958) to go along with titles in the 1500 meters in 1956 and the 880 yards in 1958.

And seemed to be universally well liked and popular.

Comparing people across sports like that is a waste of time. Whoever said that should give their head a wobble.

LOL, Greatest Ever Irish Sportsperson is an impossible one. If they make you proud to be Irish, then they are a great Irish sportsperson. If it still gives you a thrill to watch their great achievements on YouTube, then they are also probably a great Irish sportsperson.

We have it good in this country - many wonderful athletes and competitors over so many sports and pretty much every one of them super-proud to wear the national jersey.

Yerah if the measure is Olymic Gold Medalist
it's a grand comparison.

Don't underestimate how few people known who Ronnie Delaney is simply because he won his medal in 1956 in Australia. Same thing will happen for KT by 2084 or whatever

Sport is inherently subjective.

You can't even compare across generations within a sport let alone across different sports

More of an art school project vibe about this one but it probably captures the excitement and the heroic last lap a bit better. He ran pretty much the entire last lap in lane 2 or 3 - that's around 4 metres longer than any of the other lads and he still whipped them.

He won 40 consecutive mile races indoor from 1956 - 1959.

Ovett went 45 straight a few years later and was deliberately targeting Delaney's streak
