So as the title says, thought it was the exhaust, so thought it best to bring it to main dealer.
They have checked it and have mentioned that the timing belt is slipping and that bits that should not be are hitting off one another.

Financially and mechanically speaking, am I in the shit?

if the timing belt has lost tension, then dont drive it! You will cause more damage to pistons and valves. The belt will cost roughly 250+, main dealer will charge you about 70 an hour, depends on engine size.
