Henri Charrier pretty much made up papillon.I watched Escape from Alcatraz on amazon prime the other night. It's definitely dated looking, understandably, but you get past that after about 15 mins and it's a fairly rollocking ride from there on.
Clint is reliable as ever and Patrick McGoohan (the titular Prisoner) is good as the evil warden. The guy playing Charley Butts looked really familiar but I couldn't place him - he was Mr Heckles in Friends I guess a good 15 years after this was filmed.
Prison break movies are good fun but perhaps wouldn't have the same impact if not based on a true story, so I can see why there aren't more of them. Shawshank I guess the pick of the bunch on the fictional side. Papillon (original) on the other.
