The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

It's not a bad auld flick. Michael Mann directs and it looks brilliant. Seriously beautiful cinematography.

They do a good job positioning the context in the French and Indian war in 1757. very few yanks let alone anyone else would know much about it.

The script is a bit shit though. Loads of "let's move this along by making a stupid illogical decision" particularly in the climactic last 30 mins.

They didn't bother having the actual mohicans say anything till the last 5 mins so the emotional heft was about zero.

Still and all it's a shame.Daniel Day Lewis didn't do a few more action Movies. He was physically very able and realistic.

The Baddie Wes Studi looked mental and Madeline Stowe was surprisingly badass as the love interest, way better than the average damsel in distress.

Well worth a watch 6/10

Cracking soundtrack too.

Its a film you'll seldom not watch in its entirety if you stumble across it channel hopping .

i gave this a solid 8 or 9/10 a few years back on here. i can get with the guap’s gripes but it’s the acting by the mohican extras that really let the film down for me

Whiplash- 6/10- Great performance by the two leads, but I couldn't say it was an enjoyable watch.

Lilo and Stitch- 5/10- grand, as these things go. I had to bring the kids to the cinema to give them a break from the heat. A rare complaint in Ireland!

Ah give over.

Whiplash is a 10/10.

Bring Her Back 7.5/10

I love a good horror and this does not disappoint. Brought to you from the same directors as Talk to Me, Sally Hawkins (Paddington) plays a grieving mother who has found a way to bring the soul of her daughter back to the land of the living.

Dripping in tension and horror, this delves deep in to the world of grief and loss, and what people are willing to do to overcome. All actors play an absolute blinder, particularly the soul patsy Ollie, Joanah Wren Philips,who I hope was afforded all the therapy he wanted.

A must watch for horror fans.

Stumbled across this last night.

Sally Hawkins kookiness used to good effect to throw the audience off guard and deliver a genuinely unhinged performance. Her best work since her breakthrough role in Happy go lucky.

The main young fella was excellent I thought. The body horror aspects were particularly gruesome. Had to put my hand up to cover my eyes at one point. Which is something I haven't done in years.

Reminded me of another Aussie horror The Babbadook which found horror in a mundane domestic setting. Definitely an influence on the Philipou bros. Will watch Talk to me, which I haven't seen.


Would give it a 7/10.

Speaking of Last of the Mohicans, any of ye film buffs know the Cork connection to the 1992 version?

I watched Escape from Alcatraz on amazon prime the other night. It's definitely dated looking, understandably, but you get past that after about 15 mins and it's a fairly rollocking ride from there on.

Clint is reliable as ever and Patrick McGoohan (the titular Prisoner) is good as the evil warden. The guy playing Charley Butts looked really familiar but I couldn't place him - he was Mr Heckles in Friends I guess a good 15 years after this was filmed.

Prison break movies are good fun but perhaps wouldn't have the same impact if not based on a true story, so I can see why there aren't more of them. Shawshank I guess the pick of the bunch on the fictional side. Papillon (original) on the other.

The dynamic between Teller and Jonah Jameson is terrific.

Unbelievable tension and compulsive throughout.

The final ten minutes is amazing .
