Pubs that are no more in Cork

On a brighter note The Southern Star (up the hill from Paddy The Farmers) is reopening tomorrow!!!

It was closed for what seemed like over a year and will be of some comfort to local socialisers who'd seen the three pubs at or very near that cross-road with Capwell, The Southern Star, The Lions Den, and The Bridge Inn, all close in recent years. The Glenanaar in that general area is also gone of course.

Walked past the Southern Star yesterday and it looks like some of the workmen who'd been toiling there for the last few weeks were having an early sup. Hopefully this will be a complete success for the guys who've reopened it, and from first glance anyway it looks to have been tastefully refurbished.

Maintained much of the old-look but much cleaner and brighter and a bit more minimalist. Might even stop in there for a quart myself over the weekend.👍

That's great news Soundy - those three pubs used to do a fine business back in the day from locals and the post-shift trade from St Finbarrs. Odd gathering of teachers from CCRÍ too albeit they generally headed down to Douglas Street.

As you say, best of luck to them. Tough business to make a crust from these days.

Talking to a farmer the other day, has 11 houses and putting 14 refugees in one of them, must be a big gaff
How is that even legal? At best, I'm guessing 4 bedrooms with bunk beds and a large couple of rooms downstairs partitioned.

The human misery equivalent of the energy crisis where they get anything from €10K per year per wind turbine on their land. Hungry c*nts

Dealing with a load of these types, they all seem to have an air of condescension and arrogance.

😂

"Ernest said he used to live in Ballintemple, for six and a half years before moving to Blackrock so he's "very familiar with both the local area and the clientele".

Sorry now Ernest but Ballintemple is much closer to Blackrock than to High Street/Southern Road

That aside I'm delighted the Southern Star has reopened. I was in there over the weekend and there was a great buzz there, including a few old faces who were wondering if their old watering hole was going to be the same or different or wha?

For a start, they've done a brilliant job on the Beer Garden imho. Artificial grass underfoot, big comfortable seating, most of the area covered by a mini bus-office type awning. And there was even a food van parked inside the gates serving one of the nicest beefburgers I've had in a long long time.

Pint of stout was good, Coors was good, wine came from 750ml bottles rather than the mini bottles of yeuch, and the bar staff were efficient and friendly.

The pool table is in a slightly awkward spot at the entrance to both the toilets and the beer-garden but other than that looked good, I didn't get a chance to play on it. Alas I didn't get a chance to review the jacks but if it's anything like the rest of the pub it'll be pristine.

For those traditionalists, the old bar actually is fully intact, albeit it looks like it's been cleaned up a bit, and the old board flooring is still there too. All the furniture is new or at least newly refurbished with leather much in evidence.

If I was looking for slight things they could improve I think it's a bit dark, especially over on the left (as you face it) of the bar. There'd be no reading of anything there. Lovely glass globes for lighting over the bar itself but as I say the lighting elsewhere in the front was poor. And, something I think all pubs should do and am surprised at how relatively few in Cork do it, have coat hooks under the bar and countertops so that people's coats aren't taking up space.

All in all, 8 out of 10. Early days and it could become a 10/10 (y)

The Capwell Bar which later became The Capwell Sports Bar, was a great spot with a pool table and jukebox upstairs.

I used always bring the lads there, but only cause it was near Loafers. I used go "be right back m8s just taking an important call then snake into Loafers for a quick G&T with the gay lads"
