Pubs reopening June 29th

Had a family extended do in the South County in 2019. Tried to rip me off on the bill for booking a family room out the back + finger food. When I called them on the bill, they soon backed down. Vastly overrated pub and the Stout is even worse.

Family room out the back?

You're thinking of a different pub

They gave us a private space behind the bar, right side as you walk in. As somebody who was born in Douglas and lived there till my mid 20s and top of that, all of mother's side are from Douglas/Grange, I don't think I'm mistaken.

I'm not going to argue with you.

My loyalty to the South County ended earlier today.

I always preferred Johnnos anyway. Fair play to Donal for running what can only be described as Cork's TOP gastropub and event venue.

South County? Never heard of it.

No need to argue bud. I grew up playing for Douglas Hall since I was 6, played Street Leagues, played pitch and putt up that bloody hill, worked at Dunnes, Douglas Court etc before upgrading to Turners Cross.

I just texted Tom there to wish him my best. Jesus he's looked after myself and my family so much over the years. It seems like the right decision for them, I think they would have got a better price in recent years but it is what it is.

I know who bought it, I don't know anything about them and have never been into their other pub, but best of luck to them. I hope the staff are all looked after and absolutely nothing changes.

I was in school with Stephen, he started part time there when we were in 4th year, and now he's the manager. Sarah has been there a similar length of time and has just had a child and bought a house. I hope the first thing the new owners do is sit down with them and tell them that nothing will change for them.

There are a few bits of signed sports memorabilia in the cabinet out back that I donated to the pub. I'm going to go in and ask for them back, they were always "on loan" and this seems like the time for the loan to end.
Heard through the grapevine who the new owner is, has more than 1 pub (stand corrected if wrong he may have sold one in north Cork and one in Dublin)
Of the two in Cork both very much of the same vibe of the South County in my opinion.
Local bars, majority of employees from area including family members working there.

Tom a top operator was there only recently myself, didn't try to do anything 'extra' to stand out - great food offering and great kitchen.
As regards Stephen great to hear from you he plyed his trade their and takes great pride in place - he's great customer service and when needed can be stern, Sarah is the girl during days mainly is she? If so she too is brilliant.
I imagine nothing will change as regards staffing and operating unless staff decide too it's time to move on.

If I'm in again will wish Tom best of luck.

As regards the memorabilia fair play for the 'loan' added great character to place, also great to see some of the local winning teams along with Cork teams on the wall. As some who occasionally went to the South County and hearing of you and your family connection MOE might it be worthwhile talking to new owner and seeing if you continue the loan? As I said as an occasional customer I think some of the memorabilia gives the place great character (selfish of me in one way to make that suggestion so please do not feel pressure or insulted)

I was advised by another publican to ask for those items back now and see how the dust settles.

I've a sliotar signed by the 1999 Cork hurling team in there, and a programme from the 2001 Irish open in Fota signed by all the big names, including Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Thomas Bjorn, and all the Irish lads. They're worth looking after like.

Had a very good schoolboy team there with Lars, Stevie Birmingham, Shortie, Wills, Kev, Ian O Callaghan and others.

Played good football too.

Ya you're better off as well, I've seen the sliotar many times heading to jacks (personal favourite) and have also noticed the programme. If they were mine I'd probably take as well with the uncertainty if they'll remain on show or if there was to be renovations and they went missing I'd be very upset.

Hopefully the new owner may reach out to you and a new relationship is created for you and the South County to have memorabilia potentially back there and even an acknowledgement that it's on loan from a customer.
