Pubs reopening June 29th

10.5c profit on a pint?

How are places even staying open 😱

For example, before the price increases, if a pub in Dublin now sells a pint of Guinness for €6, that means first the VAT is €1.12 (23% of 6 divided by 1.23)

€6 – €1.12 = €4.88

Of the remaining amount, €1.46 goes to Diageo:

€4.88 – €1.46 = €3.42

Then, there is the excise to subtract. According to the Government, the excise duty on a 4.3% ABV beer (like Guinness) is 54 cent.

€3.42 – €0.54 = €2.88

So the pub is left with €2.88 it earns per pint. However, this is before various overheads are subtracted, including staff costs, rent, insurance energy bills, upkeep, etc.

Pint of Guinness and a glass of Coke in Cronins, Crosshaven

=

€10.40.

Rarely do I ever question prices in a place, but ffs the glass of Coke must have been nearly a fiver. Where's the Excise on that?

The 3 harps bar Albufera, Irish barman, keg under taps, Guinness on a par with the Mutton, domeage to bottom of glass, 8.5/10. Better than most places in Cork.

Gorgeous.

Kinnegar Limeburner is nice beer, only ever had it from a bottle though

They have Scraggy Bay, which is lovely, and a sour beer that I haven't seen before.

I just went for a Guinness and it was really good actually.

Cronins was absolutely empty though. I've never seen it so quiet. And tbh I really don't like what they've done with the place. One of the most unique and quirky bars in Cork now feels very modern and bland.
