I can't find any reference to this study anywhere other than the Daily Mail.
I would be fairly sceptical until I see it printed somewhere more believable.
The fact that they continually say the links were "clicked on" as if there would be a human trawling through the gazillions of links sent through their networks every day. It's more likely a bot doing link checking for phishing and click jacking scams.
