It's a good point, we have so many broken public service systems be it Health, Policing etc in theory a UI could be a real opportunity for proper reform across the board however I can't see it actually panning out that way in reality.Too much of the Island doesn't work optimally, because of the border, different governments, etc.
For climate, health, water, energy, education, transport, housing and economic reasons, really I think it would improve things for all citizens on this island.
That's very pessimistic. It's a good point, we have so many broken public service systems be it Health, Policing etc in theory a UI could be a real opportunity for proper reform across the board however I can't see it actually panning out that way in reality.
What makes you think we'd pay the UK any money?I’m in favour of a United Ireland but let’s not pretend that there won’t be pain to achieve it. Some of our public services are far behind what they have in the North and we’d have to match that meaning extra taxes for us down here and potentially up north too. We’d also have to either scrap or drastically reduce VRT.
Germany reunified in 1990 yet the had a solidarity charge until 2021. The 1990s were difficult for Germany as they coped with reunification and we’d experience similar because we’d have to pay the UK Government billions.
It’s something I’d be prepared to do but our leaders need to be honest about it.
They’d lose approximately £20 billion annually in tax revenue. We’d have to buy people’s public sector pensions, stamps etc etc. What makes you think we'd pay the UK any money?
They'd be quite happy to let us take it off their hands.
