you could say the same about the dail. far too many elected officials compared to our size. britain has 10 times our population but only 3 times the elected number of MPs. think of how much money we would save if thats your barometer of the presidency
The Dail has a purpose it governs and runs the state.
I agree there is way too many TDs
However we can survive without a president, we need a government, even a way smaller one.

Despite some not wanting to hear him express his own opinions I quite enjoyed it.
Small in stature but full of fight even into his elderly years and that has to be admired.

The mind seems to be drifting a bit now but I suppose that can be expected from a man of his age.

I wish him well.

I totally agree Fed.

I didn’t always agree with him but I think he used the Office and the right to shape debate extremely well even if at times he made the Government uncomfortable.

He was right in a lot of things. Housing is a disaster, it’s gone long beyond a crisis at this stage.

He’s probably been more withdrawn in recent years due to his age but I couldn’t help but have admiration and respect for him for walking out on All Ireland Final days this year to meet the teams with two walking sticks. He was obviously in discomfort and nobody would have blamed him for using a wheelchair but like the fighter he’s always been he walked.

He’s done the state a lot of service and we should be grateful to and for him.
