May he rest in peace. It must be an extremely tough job. Answerable for everything and yet all the while your boss isn't guaranteed to return your calls.

Being God's representative on Earth is fairly big pressure. He seemed like a good man and carried it well.

i suspect he knew that progression will only come in small steps forward and he was trying to move the church in the right direction.

Only my opinion.

No doubt he was trying to move the church in a more progressive direction.

Unfortunately the Vatican and the catholic church is an organisation of deep seated corruption, self serving hierarchy, greed, subjugation of the people, and have a long history of covering up the rot.

Most organised religions are like this.

No doubt he was trying to move the church in a more progressive direction.

Unfortunately the Vatican and the catholic church is an organisation of deep seated corruption, self serving hierarchy, greed, subjugation of the people, and have a long history of covering up the rot.

Most organised religions are like this.

And changing that is the enormity of the task ahead that awaits the next pope.

When you compare his appointment of cardinals (108) to Benedicts (22) and John Paul's (5) you can see what he was attempting to do.

He also took on the corruption in the Vatican bank in an attempt to reform it.

While not going far enough he did take numerous actions to tackle clerical sex abuse, from opening up internal Church documents to punishing high-ranking clergy.

Will the next pope continue on with his work remains to be seen, but he has tried to manipulate those odds in his favour.

Rest in peace Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
