A suggestion that one of the disused coffee pods at Grand Parade should be used a a day time Garda depot was suggested by coopted sitting councillor Mick Nugent. The idea was supported by elected sitting councillor member Gerry Buttimer.
I would have thought that it should be used in evening and night also.
However the who idea they say needs to be examined and a multi agency committee.
For the Gardai and the public many issues need the be thrashed out.
Will facial camera technology be used in the area. What level of weapons will be stored there -. Teaser pepper spray battens hand cuffs .
What facilities will be there . phone internet parking shower toilet gym. Have the GRA been consulted?.

It's a bit like saying we have a shortage of beds in our hospitals and people asking 'why don't we just buy new beds'

It's 5 minutes from the Bridewell to the Grand Parade.

Yet it would likely take about half an hour for Gardai from the Bridewell to respond to an incident in the Grand Parade, if they were to come at all.

I think having a visible Garda presence on our streets is important, especially with the upsurge in druggies even on our main thoroughfares these days.

When tourists come to Cork, or indeed go to any city, they tend to stick to the main streets where they expect to be and feel a bit safer, and avoid narrow and dark streets. If there was a Garda hut where a couple of Gardai could be available but at the same time not having to stand about in inclement weather I think it would provide a sense of security to visitors and indeed natives given that more and more of the "walking dead" seem to be appearing even on our main streets.

One of the pods on Grand Parade would be an ideal such Garda hut. However it is done we need Gardai visible on our streets.

It will be inflatable gardai who look the real deal from a distance, you can buy inflatable dolls which look the real deal,,

Spoke to someone the other day whose pal was recorded by that lunatic Grace right-to-bike. Apparently the cops actually called to his door and appologised but said they had to call because the complaint had been logged, and they had to be able to say that they had interviewed yerman, and that lycraman makes an average of 50! complaints a month about motorists. Talk about wasting police time.

Yes in a Garda station someone has to remain on counter duty. In a pop-up Garda Shelter there should be no such constraints. It's just a Garda-only hut. They won't always be in it if they're chasing down a suspect but it could have one of those "green man" garda intercoms on the door for when the allocated gardai are out on the street chasing down some miscriant.

Garda visibility on the street would act as a deterrent for the ne'erdowells.
