Places that won't reopen

Rising costs are the main problem facing One Society, the same complaint that is emanating from so many similar hospitality focused businesses across the country.

Its staff costs, which are a large chunk of the overall costs bill, are up 9% year on year, while other costs like energy, insurance, ingredients etc are 15-18% higher.

The restaurant boss is trying to manage the situation as best he can, but with a raft of further increases coming in the form of sick pay changes, a minimum wage rise and the introduction of pension auto-enrolment, it is not easy.

A further problem is that footfall is also lower, William said, despite a boost around special events including the four Coldplay gigs at Croke Park.

Prices cannot be increased any further, without threatening the value proposition of the restaurant, he added.

So in an effort to deal with the challenges, William decided to take what he described as a "huge gamble" and opened a second outlet in Smithfield, in the hope that quieter periods in one of the restaurants might be offset by busier times in the other.

Hidden by One Society, as it is called, only began trading three weeks ago and although it is still loss making, William is confident still that the gamble will pay off in time, though he admitted the overall situation is "hanging in the balance".

Why the actual fuck would you complain about your business being on its last legs and your solution is to open another fucking place?

i've never heard of ANY business being in profit after three weeks tbh as you've so many set-up costs with opening any sort of business, presumably hes paying rent on the place, a solicitor probably had to ok the lease contract, signage, leccy, gas, furniture, printing menues, buying cutlery/plates/pots/pans etc, staff etc etc etc

you're doing well if you're in profit by year 3, let alone week 3

Spot on Jim,
It’s universal, start of year 3 you may start to make a few bob,
A lot of people opening businesses today expect immediate returns, that rarely if ever happens but to add to a really misguided mindset (and money borrowed from family and friends as there is no banking ) these new costs will bury new startups in the interim and absolutely kill any business that came into Covid struggling ,
It’s very real,I’d say there will be many hundreds of businesses go down next year ,
Min wage thing is only a subsidy to middle class families who have teens working ,
It’s of little benefit to an actual couple working on min wage ,
Of 160 k people working on min wage i estimate 40 k are foreign students ,50 k are regular students ,
A student working three shifts plus tips and living at home ,paying no rent ,no transport and no food enjoys the equivalent of a 54 k a year salary if you add I’d all the expenses ,

So 70 k people could have been helped by taxation ammendments,so this really is a bad bit of planning ,the teen living at home is the winner .thats great for the teen but no help to people struggling

The pint has to go up nearly 80 c between now and Jan 2026 just to cover the incoming costs ,let alone inevitable brewery increases ,
The price of any given restaurant dish about 4 e a plate ,the fact that this is plain to see is disturbing

Just to add ,this is brilliant for the young kids at this point in time ,they have more disposable income per week than many of their parents have per month and great for self esteem plus there is no staff shortages really ,what a great time to be a teen.

presumably he's banking on economies of scale

i.e. if he's buying more meat/veg/drink etc he might get a bit of a better rate from his wholesalers.... but not much I imagine

however if he's going public saying he's not making any money I imagine his suppliers (and revenue) will be keeping him on a pretty tight leash, it's an absolute red flag to any credit control department

always make me laugh when firms like fast food firms/pubs/restaurants that get paid straight away look for extended credit from everyone else.... If I went into a place with a bunch of mates, had a slap-up meal and a few drinks each and then told the waiter "we'll pay you in 90 days" I imagine the coppers would be called, and rightly so

Prior to Covid our local PSV operator had a large bus, a few coaches, mini bus and a couple of cars. I'd go to the pub 5 miles away once or twice a week by taxi and various other trips by mini bus at affordable prices. He lost it all as a result of Covid and now it costs me €40 for taxis before the first pint is even settled so I rarely bother.
