Old Cork Photos

Anyone out there remember Reidy’s - it used be on the corner of Sheares’ Street opposite St Francis Hall - long since knocked to make way for the extension at the rear of the Mercy Hospital.
She used to run that for a while prior to opening Reidy’s Wine Vault opposite Jury’s Hotel.

Wine Vault was a gorgeous place when it first opened. Very classy and big crowds initially. Seemed to lose trade relatively quickly and just went out of business. Nearby Millwheel was another that used be mobbed but just went out of business too 😔

My dad used to bartend the Millwheel back in the 70s

Didn’t that become the Thirsty Scholar?

Yup Cork's first (un)official Gay Bar when I think homosexuality was still on the books as a criminal offence. One of the Reidy's was an "effeminate man". It was unkindly said "He's not half the man his sister is".

Then Slicks kinda took over with a younger generation - blackboard and chalk in the jacks and all.
Excuse the ignorance/youthfulness/innocence but what's the reference to blackboard and chalk?
