Thought the same, thought the defender had to be in front of the keeper.

For offside, it doesn't matter whether the last defender is in front or behind the keeper. In both instances an attacker would be played onside, if he's not goalside of the 2nd last defending player.

But when a defender steps behind the line he effectively leaves the field without permission - which, if I recall the "You're the Ref" columns accurately, is an offence - probably punishable by caution.

Would be interesting if, in such a situation, VAR brought it to the ref's attention. Feels like it'd be a sneaky way of catching a goalscorer offside, albeit at the cost of a yellow card.

Edit: here's the official ruling in cases like this. Feels a very fair way to deal with it
