This would be a well-established thing since teamwork became so tightly controlled. Radios made a massive difference in this regard. In the past, you might slip away before everyone in the team knew you were a GC threat. Now it's instant info from the team car to the riders and a few lads are told to bring back the break within 30 seconds.Slow day-peleton tipping away at 30 kmph, no breakaway so far so we get some harmless Munster v Leinster banter between Kelly and Craig Doyle who has really mastered the Des Lynham/Terry Wogan / Irish Blarney on British telly sport.
Interesting point one of the commentators (Larry-still a pro, rode the Giro last year) making that some riders will deliberately lose GC time so the leading teams would then allow them go in the breakaway.
