Official Cork City FC/LOI thread!

City played Spurs, United, Celtic, Leeds and Swindon in summer friendlies at Musgrave Park 1989/90/91. I'm sure there were others too. Maybe Everton??? I can't quite remember.

They played Bayern in the UEFA Cup in September 1991 also at Musgrave Park.

The Man City and Southampton games were played at Cork Con, weirdly enough. I doubt there's barely been a Soccer match there since.

Great times to be a kid / teenager. Henry's at the weekends too. We were spoiled!

I was at the United game in summer 1990. It finished 0-0. Spoke to Alex after the game and he was very pleasant despite being unhappy with United's display. Afaicr the game was part of the deal which took Brian Carey to Old Trafford.

All the big names played in those games. It was before the days of trips to the far east, US or Australia for the big English teams so games against LOI teams would be treated seriously.

James Atcheson was 13 going on 14 in 1990, living in Muff just on the border of Donegal and Derry, when Alex Ferguson's squad was in the north-west to play a pre-season friendly at the Brandywell

I'd be a big fan of Toni Polster, and he scored in Turners Cross while playing for FC Köln.

There's so much football history in both Cork and Ireland. Sher didn't George Best play here for a while too.

Nope. Brian moved to United after the FAI cup replay defeat to Derry in 1989. I was at both games. Dave Barry was still playing GAA for the Cork footballers at the time and the talk was he was getting grief over playing for City. City also had Kevin Nugent playing up front who went on to have quite a decent career in England.
