Every word of last week’s legal ruling was like a drink of clean, cold water after wandering through a seemingly endless desert — from the declaration that “the concept of sex is binary, a person is either a woman or a man”, to the insistence that all institutions providing services to women, such as hospitals, hostels or sporting events, must act in accordance with the “biological characteristics that make an individual a man or woman”.
These are things that the great majority of people, in Ireland as much as the UK, always knew to be “self-explanatory” and to “require no further explanation”, to further quote from last week’s court judgment.
Trans people have a right to respect and to be treated with dignity. The court reiterated that, too.
What they never had is any right to demand that everyone else bend to their will.
RTÉ cannot continually shy away in terror from addressing these contentious but vitally important questions and then be surprised that the number of people who find the national broadcaster “trustworthy” is at such low levels — just 40pc, according to data released last week.
