They only get to "opt out" before there is a child in existence though (im not getting into an abortion debate as to when life starts). Once a child exists, both parents have obligations towards it.

There is also arguments with regards to maintenance etc, why if both parents are responsible once the child as you say comes into existence are women who give up there children for adoption not also liable for maintenance, this is more discrimination against men.

So should a man who feels he is not ready to be a father be able to in effect give his child up for adoption like a woman can?

yes, so if men were to be given that choice say in the first 3 months of pregnancy, sign away there rights, similar I suppose to what women can do when they give up there child for adoption because they feel they are not ready for a child, in effect its would be a tool available to men who are not ready for fatherhood.

Gut instinct says no, but it’s not something I’ve thought a lot about.

I agree with you, its something that actually very little people think about but does society not think that for whatever reasons women choose not to become a mother either by abortion, adoption or even fostering, that men do not have to contend with those very same reasons, yet men are given zero choice in this regard, a woman can have a termination and move on arguably unaffected for the rest of her life yet a man in the exact same position as this woman may have the rest of his life affected financially and emotionally and it does not stop at 18,it will be more than likely for the rest of his life as he may have to deal with the feeling of there being a child in his life he never actually wanted but was in affect forced upon him by the law of the land, we live in a world where forced motherhood is unimaginable yet forced fatherhood is expected.

Actually, the only thing that is forced on a father is maintenance. If the father chooses not to have a relationship with their child no one forces them to do so. I fail to see the difference to the child between knowing that their father abandoned them before birth rather than after?

In the situation you’re talking about, the child’s rights supersede those of the adults imo.

Well in theory you are right, but a lot of those men who as u would say abandon their children do get forced into fatherhood, more than likely they will be on the receiving end of society to pressure them into a relationship with the child, women will often tell those children who there father is and then he is seeked out by the child, often this can be 20 years later and can have catestrophic effects say if that man had moved on and had a family of his own, also I believe that a lot of the men who do not want to be in their children's lives are not because they just want no link whatsoever with the mother, the same reason I believe why women abort,it would I believe be easier for the child to know that from day 1 their father just did not want to be a father at that particular point in time, the same as why so many women do not want to be a mother at that particular time, in affect it is male abortion.

What is wrong here is that women have full control of the situation but do not have to accept full responsibility, does the right of a newborn child actually supercede the right of a man who may be on the verge of suicide due to the pregnancy? This is like saying to a woman who is suicidal due to being pregnant that she is not allowed to abort.In affect at least in this case the child lives.
