The article pits this as the right of a woman to have a baby versus the right of a man not to.

What about the rights of the child?

Child I suppose has the same rights as the man, none. In this so called progressive world where women get the right to choose or not choose to be a mother, should a man not get the same right, I'm not pro choice, or pro life but imagine saying to a woman she has no choice but to have a child she does not want, not be allowed to give it up for adoption and be financially responsible for it, this is what an awful lot of men get told every day by the law of the land.

The child gets the right to know both their parents, and to be supported and maintained by them. I would say those are fairly major things.

Its a very important conversation. There is a lot of talk of gender equality at the moment, and rightfully so. But all i am hearing is the promotion of women, not the promotion of equality between men and woman. Its such an overlooked nuance in the whole debate.

There are many instances in society where women receive more preferential treatment. Rights of fathers v rights of mothers, maternity v paternity benefit, male shut-out from certain careers, but, we never hear these sides of the equality debates.

I'm amazed that this is never discussed, it's like something that society is not meant to mention, a girl can for Example can terminate a pregnancy for any reason, lack of financial se curity, not wanting to have a child by the particular man in question, not wanting to be connected to that man for the rest of their lives, let's face it 95%of terminations would be for these very reasons yet men are expected to just suck it up, why, I know that the scandanavian countries I think are looking at this where by a man gets a certain period of time say 3 months at the start of an unplanned pregnancy to literally sign away all his rights in every way, I believe it would actually solve an awful lot of unplanned preganacy.

Yes. But as we know women get to opt out of this for whatever reason, should a man be given that right?

They only get to "opt out" before there is a child in existence though (im not getting into an abortion debate as to when life starts). Once a child exists, both parents have obligations towards it.

yes, so if men were to be given that choice say in the first 3 months of pregnancy, sign away there rights, similar I suppose to what women can do when they give up there child for adoption because they feel they are not ready for a child, in effect its would be a tool available to men who are not ready for fatherhood.
