Must.... Own....property....

Sounds about right. had major lols trying to get an electrician to do a job that would literally have taken him 15 mins. Eventually got a local fella who was recommended through a guy. Its like the mafia trying to get tradespeople nowadays.

I had this experience with getting a new boiler fitted. I got loads of quotes and they were all coming in at crazy prices like five and six grand. And they all put me on the long finger.

I said it to my brother who is a foreman for a commercial construction company. He said it sounded dear and rang a crowd that he uses for his projects.

"You're going to give two of this fella's lads €2500 in cash - that includes the boiler - they're RGI so there's a cert as well. They'll do it over the next bank holiday weekend."

And they did - and a few other jobs they noticed too. But without having the brother to pressure this fella, I'd have forked out double.

Before any of ye point out that my brother is a builder - I did ask him to price the job and his reply to me was;

"Do you really think that I'm going to haul 4 of my lads off a site where I'm building 60 houses so that you can have a downstairs jacks? Cop the fuck on, biywilla!"

Verbatim.

One of my new favourite things is trying to find a builder/building company to give them an extortionate amount of money.

I did a lot of the renovation work on my old house myself. There's a lot that I can do, there's a lot that I can't and there's a few things that I thought that I could definitely do and discovered, to my chagrin, that I definitely should not do. Plumbing is not just Water Lego for example.

Anyway. I have one more job to do on my gaff - it's not a huge job but it's not small either and involves blowing out a new doorway, knock through into the garage, fitting a steel head, etc.

And also moving some gas pipes. I learned my lesson with a water pipe so I don't fancy doing having a Deepwater Horizon situation in my 3-bed semi.

I've spent around 2 months ringing builders to take on this job some gave me a straight no over the phone, some never even appear at my house to look at the job. One of them - Sigma Homes maybe? - said that they won't take on anything renovation-wise for less than €250K.

One contractor - after spending 45 minutes going over the job/drawing (whilst drinking my good coffee with 4 sugars in it) ended up quoting us €140K to €150K - then in the same breath said "but it's not worth my while" and suggested maybe finding "a few Eastern Europeans to do the heavy work".

Roll on the crash, lads.
Yeah my whole summer will be spent digging out floors, blowing out interior walls and putting in the foundation for an extension.

Left to me the whole structure would probably collapse but the son in law was a builder before he changed career in the last crash and knows what he's doing.

Was shocked to discover the price of the delivery of blocks alone no mind saying bringing in professionals if you don't have the skills to do these things.

Too many tradies went at other stuff in the crash. I know a fella doing boilers, he's in his 50s and he'll tell you fellas just aren't interested in doing apprenticeships.

Maybe the impending AI apocalypse will send fellas back into it.

Interestingly - my brother said he's been inundated with requests for people that he knows to get their kid an apprenticeship.

He said that the most challenging thing is to find a young person with a decent work-ethic.

You can't say boo to fellas now!

B

That's also true.

I remember when I was working on sites as a young fella - the shit that would be said and done to you was unreal. It was part and parcel of the gig.

The brother says that he has to tell prospective apprentices (and their parents) that "You are going to be working with a bunch of right rough bastards".

Your man said he was approached by a guy to get his young fella an apprenticeship. He said first off get your man to ring himself and when he did talk to him he expects to be picked up in the morning 😆

Good luck says he

And then you have this........................

That sounds like a big hike but look at how rent in south Dublin is calculated

Formula: 10% of the total household's aggregated assessable net income + €3 per week.
Minimum rent: Around €27.40 per week

○Low-income household (e.g., mainly social welfare): Often close to the minimum (~€27–€40/week).

○Moderate income (e.g., €500–€600 net weekly household): Roughly €53–€63/week.

So the increases amount to 7.50-10 in low income thresholds or 15 euro in a moderate income household. Not exactly breaking the bank.
