When socialists like Noel Browne tried to win reforms to help the poor he was slammed by Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour.
The priests raped and abused while the politicians covered it up.
The Gardaí hunted down women who fled the institutions and sent them back.
We - the working class and poor - are not to blame.
The whole system of torture and abuse was established to keep us down.
The priests did the dirty work and it served the rich well.
The grandchildren of the politicians who established the Irish gulags are still in power.
That's why they want to shift the blame.

As far as I'm aware MM didn't say actually say "we are all to blame" so I stopped reading after that.

"Rebel Telly" appear to have incorrectly just put that in quotes to make it sound like a full on defence of the church.

Fact Check

They have produced the definitive account of how this country responded to the particular needs of single women and their children at a time when they most needed support and protection.

This should have been forthcoming from the fathers of their children, their family and friends, their community and their State, but so often it was not.

Note the exclusion of the Church.

We embraced a perverse religious morality and control, judgementalism and moral certainty, but shunned our daughters.

We honoured piety, but failed to show even basic kindness to those who needed it most.

We had a completely warped attitude to sexuality and intimacy, and young mothers and their sons and daughters were forced to pay a terrible price for that dysfunction.

To confront the dark and shameful reality which is detailed in this report we must acknowledge it as part of our national history.

Again 'We' are the actors, as opposed to the Church controlling the people. This is absurd revisionism.

Having children out of wedlock was discouraged and condemned in all countries in the past. This was not unique to Ireland or the RC Church. This was to protect children at a time when there was no welfare state and widespread poverty. Unwanted babies were often left at a church door, as religious organizations provided basic welfare services at the time. Religious organizations provided hospitals, orphanages and hostels before these services were provided by the state all over Europe. The Children's Homes were set up to meet a real need initially. I imagine that simply pointing out a bit of social history in context will subject me to some vile abuse. I am in no way excusing the horrible inhumane treatment that women were subjected to in some institutions.

Also, the role of the catholic church in mother and baby homes is addressed within the report.
