LIVE: Budget 25: As it happens

Lads out canvassing last night and tonight should have a good long look at themselves
The chancers-they can all fock off as they all know that the election is next month.

The "giveaway" budget seems low on housing and infrastructure cash wise with the cost of construction and all these once off child and energy payments will just melt away like snow on a ditch and can very easily be cut or stopped on a whim.

Are people that gullible?

Yes.

I pity the government who down the line may have to end the free school books initiative, This could indeed come tumbling down in a few years,
But reality is if they had announced little or no supports for people but were going to plough the money into hospitals, houses, roads, etc
they would have been hammered at the polls,

Should the govt have reduced the vat rate to 9% for say a 9 month period and stipulate that if it doesnt make a marked
difference then it will be increased again,?

No ,firstly the hotel industry screw us every time an event comes to town. L Fitz hotel 150 for the semi final 205 for the final and that was good value .. There is a restaurant to cork city which is very popular charging 25 euro for what is a glorified burger and chips meal where as i got in killarney of all places a 10 ounce burger plus chip and a pint for 22 euro last saturday . The reduction in the vat rate will not put extra bums on seats it will make extra profit.

No Terry, they shouldn't. The pub reps are nearly as bad as the IFA who are constantly shouting about how their sector is in crisis.

It is all short-term planning for a single year and all at the mercy of politicians, ideology and the global economy.

There should be 5 - 10 plans costed and funded including for inflation that all parties have to agree to for critical items like public housing, water, health, utilities like electricity, sewage, roads and rail infrastructure etc. and all at the whim of some Minister playing politics.

They have kind of done a bit of this for buses and rail improvements but only because the E.U. demanded it as they wanted to know where their invesyment was going long-term.

All parties are simply plucking numbers out of the sky promising new builds- the workers are just not there and the planning system is not fit for purpose.

Zero long-term planning or long-term funding but here is a few €€€ this year now please vote for me.
