Linux Mint: For when Windows 11 finally makes you break

HRN

For anyone looking for a solid, stable, fast, and EASY alternative to Windows then you could do far worse that Linux Mint.
*people will have their own opinions on which version of Linux to use but I have found this to be the easiest for non-tech heads to use*

There are three versions (flavours) of Mint but 99% of people will want Cinnamon (it's the full fat version will all features)

Then go to the official installation guide at https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
Ignore the first 2 steps as you got your ISO from the Linux website above

Go to Create the bootable media

The only real thing which will catch some people, from here, is the Boot menu. When you restart your computer you will see (quickly) something like...
"Press F2 to enter BIOS menu" each manufacturer may have a different F key to select. You only get a moment to press the button so don't be pissed if it begins to boot to Windows, just restart and keep tapping that F key the next time around.
You can click that and then select the boot order/menu, and then select your Bootable Media USB

From there literally just follow the guide (with pics)

Any decent YouTube tutorial for n00bs?

Would make it much less intimidating for a lot of people.

I've switched some people over from W10 and they can't get over the difference. Like a new computer/laptop is the most common response

Just to add, a new machine is surplus to requirements. Most likely the one you have is fine.

If it can run windows 8 it will be a rocket on linux

Yeah was about to put up a tutorial but had to take a call.

Ubuntu is great but I was suggesting Mint because it is more intuitive for Windows users

Anyone following the first video: definitely look at his BIOS prep work

Grabbed a PC which is about 8 years old. Did none of the BIOS pre-work just decided to take a USB key, stick it in and follow the onscreen steps as presented to me.
Half an hour later and here I am...

If it weren't for the shitty processor this would be a grand little PC for the young fella, if I lamped my old gtx1080 into it

Been thinking on this one and it can seem daunting. You can get years of extra use out of old laptops/surfaces
If anyone is looking to do this to a laptop or something and is just a bit unsure, give me a shout. It you're around Blackpool or Fermoy, the libraries would be available to meet up and actually do it there.

Start small but the more people who see that Windows (particularly the way they are going) are not the answer anymore, the better

Fair fucks to ya. I might start carrying around a bootable USB key with Ubuntu on it in case I'm at someone's place and they mention an old machine
