Not familiar with those cases but appreciate the knowledge
We generally have a decent enough record when it comes to recognising legal insanity. That said, we would generally then lock up those people for the rest of their lives, regardless of whether or not they regained sanity!

It is changing slightly now, but for most of our history a person would spend far longer incarcarated in the CMH on a "not guilty by reason in insanity" plea than they would spend incarcarated in prison on a "guilty" plea.

I mean, I get that I'm guilty here of the fairly dreary thing which is best avoided of looking at this tragedy through the culture war prism but when it absolutely smacks you in the face like that it's very hard to ignore it. The editors have questions to answer there.

Is that not the job of columnists though? To post opinion pieces that challenge narratives and make people think and yes provoke a little outrage too.

I must try read more into the case. I’d imagine she must have been on some meds if she was suffering depression. Do you know if this was part of her defence?

Tried to avoid this story but listened to bit about in on Last Word last pm. She did suffer post natal depression following birth of their 3rd child but had addressed it with her Doctor and had booked herself into clinic to address her issues but they discharged her after 5 days.
She was on some cocktail of meds though - may shine a light on the prescription culture in USA.
Husband remains supportive - details of him finding the kids were recorded by dispatcher when he phoned 911 - absolutely heart-breaking.
It would appear that 11 of the 12 jurors accept that she was not guilty by reason of insanity with the other holding out! Jury foreman sent a note to judge saying he believed the dissenting voice did not understand concept of "reasonable doubt"
