Leonardo Di Caprio

Used to hate the guy thought he was completely overrated as an actor. That was until last year when I saw him in The Departed and hes followed it up with an incredible performance in Blood Diamond. The parts he played on both these films had a real edge about them unlike anything he previously done. Anyway I think either of these performances are worthy of an oscar.

Ya, thought he was great in Blood Diamond too - brilliant film.
Always thought he was a fine actor since that film with Robert de Niro when he was really young (di Caprio, that is) and What's eating Gilbert Grape.

He was never over rated as an actor. It's just everyone without a clue saw him in the piece of shite that was Titanic and thought "eh yeah, so?"
He did that and then his life became shite from media attention and he went off the rails for a while. He's been back on track a good few years; movies like The Aviator, Catch Me If You Can and Gangs of New York.
He was brilliant in Marvin's Room and The Basketball Diaries (you said he hasn't done gritty kinds of movies-watch this fuckin thing!)probably hi best ever performance was in What's Eating Gilbert Grape when he was only about 18 - he plays a mentally handicapped teen and how he didn't get an oscar for it is beyond me.

Don't think it did really. People in the industry know how good he is. He deliberately stayed away from doing movies like Titanic in his early career but said fuck it but then was sorry cause of all the shit that came with it. He again stayed away from the more 'Hollywood' type movies he was offered (a truckload of them as it happened) instead doing more obscure things (The Beach etc) and didn't even act that much at all for a while.

kate winslet suffered as a result of titanic too. and i think she is a fantastic actress

She has and she hasn't I think. She's another one who doesn't go for mainstream movies; she picks really odd films. Don't watch much of her stuff to be honest but ye she's a good actress.
Having said that she was shite in Titanic. There were some lines that no actor on the planet could have pulled off cause they were so tragically cheesy and generally just shite dialogue so not all the blame goes to her for that. But she was nominated for an oscar for that performance? How in the name of fuck is that possible? It was about as challenging as the easiest day on the set of Home and Away
