I only heard of this recently, it was repealed in 1987, leading to a more polarised and biased news media.

The Fairness Doctrine was a 1949 Federal Communications Commission policy in the United States. It required radio and television broadcasters to cover important public issues and present opposing viewpoints. The FCC repealed the rule in 1987, sparking a long-running debate over free speech, media bias, and political polarization.

Origins and Core Rules

Started by the FCC in 1949 based on the public interest standard.

Required stations to air discussions on controversial public topics.

Mandated that contrasting views receive fair airtime.

Did not demand equal split-second timing, but overall balance.

Upheld by the Supreme Court in the 1969 case Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC due to scarce broadcast frequencies.

I'm not playing down Jean McConville's killing anymore than that of Mrs Lyndsay or of her driver - but you at last seem to now concede their killing was twice as bad as Jean McConville's.

Now that we've established that, are you also willing to accept that what happened in the aftermath of McConville's killing was far less barbaric than what happened in the aftermath of the killing of Mrs Lyndsay and her driver?

Or do you think we should just ignore those historical facts?


BTW, the disappearance of Jean McConville was closer in time to the disappearance of Mrs Lyndsay and her driver than it is to the present day. But typically some only want to ever discuss one - again just for the political pointscoring rather than the warts and all discussion of the history of this island.

So if all three were equally bad then by simple mathematics even in whatever weird part of the world you inhabit, the killing of two people (for one of them being an informer) is doubly worse than the killing of one- no?

You made a flippant remark about McConville being taken to the seaside before she was killed as though that was somehow the factor that made her killing "better" than that of Lyndsay and her driver. It wasn't. Lyndsay and her driver being killed was two killings for the informing by one, McConville's was one for one. They were both gruesome events but I think it reasonable to say that 2 deaths were worse than just 1.

The digging up, reburying, and subsequent destroying the bodies to prevent even any means of identification, never mind a subsequent christian burial was also worse imho.

BTW, Busteed's anger at the time of the WoI might in part be explained by the fact that his infirm mother was thrown down the stairs in her own home by the british and she subsequently died of her injuries from it. Not sure such an occurance wouldn't have driven many to an extreme reaction.

I think anyone here knows I don't hold Adams in high regard so I'm not sure what it is you hope to gain with your lies.

I remember being at a funeral - well, it was a removal in O'Connor's the night before the funeral rather than the actual mass cos I wanted to show the face but didn't want it cutting into my Football Focus watching time.

Anyway - stood next to me at said removal were Bernard Allen and Noel O'Flynn.

Bernard Allen turned to me and said "Are you {my grandfather's name}, son?"

"No" I said "I'm his grandson"

"Ah! A great neighbour of mine!" said Bernard Allen. "I saw him in Hank's or the Templeacre a few weeks ago. Still loves a pint doesn't he."

"Not really" said I

"Is he on the dry?" asked Bernard

"He's dead. Since 2014." I replied "You shook my hand at his funeral and said you'd miss him terribly"

"Ah... that's right" said Bernard Allen. "Do you... em... do you know Noel O'Flynn?"

I gave Noel a nod but he had a faraway look in his eyes. A thousand yard stare and then some.

"Noel!" hissed Allen and nodded at me.

"Oh. Eh. Sorry" said Noel shaking my hand. "Sorry to hear about your grandfather"

"He died 9 years ago" I said

"And you're only having the funeral now?!" cried Noel

"Noel. NOEL!" Bernard Allen interjected "It's not this chap's grandfather's funeral. It's another funeral."

"Oh... oh right" said Noel "Sorry, I'm just a bit distracted because one of my young fellas..."

Bernard Allen rolled his eyes.

Noel continued "One of my young fellas refused to eat his dinner until I secured the use of the Parochial Hall in Churchfield for one of his meetings. His mother was on at me for a week. Christ, I had enough I just wanted to watch my Minder DVDS in peace."

"Great show, Minder was." interjected Bernard "'Er indoors and all that"

"Ah, yeah. Waterman was class. Didn't like the younger fella, Ray" said Noel.

"What has this got to do with the Parochial Hall?!" I wondered.

"Oh yeah" said Noel "Anyway, Iona basketball club were due to have their practice session in there tonight before the bingo but I got the caretaker to torpedo that. I cannot move the bingo, I don't need death threats - so I told my young fella that his meeting would have to be over by 8."

"Is it a political meeting?" I enquired. "This thing your lad is doing?"

"No, He's big into hip-hop dancing." said Noel with a heavy sigh "And now I'm just after being told that the Iona basketball team are practicing lay-ups in my drive."
