Keir Starmer PM

If Burnham wins the by-'election, Streeting's leadership bid fails and he will then be looking for political patronage from Burnham, i.e. to stay in cabinet or to be promoted.

If Burnham loses the by-election then Streeting will have been a team player and Burnham followers might look favourably on him in the leadership contest.
How do you get promoted from health minister?

The story so far:
If Burnham gets through the Makerfield by-election, it's almost certain he'll replace Starmer, it's a tough area for labour to win based on polls and the local elections and it's directly head to head with Reform. Nobody else really has a chance.

Reform have picked a candidate, Robert Kenyon, a local plumber.
Bobby has been banned from X/Twitter. Some of the details of why he was banned from twitter are slowly coming to light, I can't see why Musk's twitter should ban him for those, so I suspect there's worse:

I'm not reposting it here, it's predictably misogynistic, racist and anti-LGBTQ. With Covid conspiracy stuff mixed again.

Right now, 40% of folks in Makerfield say they're voting for that. Sounds like a lovely area.
The Greens picked a candidate. It went badly.
"Chris Kennedy was announced to be running for the Greens on Thursday, but the party confirmed he had dropped out some nine hours later, citing “personal and family reasons”.

The Times later reported it had approached Mr Kennedy about a series of social media posts he had shared.

According to the newspaper, an Instagram video shared by Mr Kennedy described the arrests of two men over an arson attack on Jewish ambulances as “total bulls*** to keep the false flag flying”."

He was dropped, the new candidate, Sarah Wakefield, is currently on maternity leave. So I guess she won't be campaigning? You're not supposed to work while on maternity leave, can lose your maternity payments if you're caught working more than a certain amount of days, IIRC it's 7. Suppose she doesn't have the job, but technically, it's iffy.

Anyway, Musk is backing Rupert Lowe's Restore Britain (for people who think Reform are too far left), who have Rebecca Shepherd as their candidate. Nothing out about her (yet). Labour will not be attacking her because right now, she's got 7% of the polls. Keep up the politics, Elon, you're helping your cause again!

Right now, Burnham has a slim lead, with 43% in the most recent poll.

If he wins, it'll be an enormous boost to labour, win a Brexity area (65% Leave), beating reform and a leader the press are mildly positive about.

"Reform UK’s candidate in the Makerfield by-election claimed he did not vote for Brexit and praised European freedom of movement on social media, material seen by The Times suggests.
...
But in a social media post dating from March 28, 2019, an account attributed to Kenyon rejected suggestions that he was a stereotypical right-winger.
He wrote: “So anyone who thinks I love Trump, voted Brexit, read the Daily Mail, live in the 1950s, a Tory and 103 is wrong. I’m none of the above.”
...
The same account was also said to have made a series of sexist comments about women, including posts from 2011 and 2012 in which Kenyon said: “I’m sexist, sorry but I am. Women can’t ref, drive or give directions.”
Other posts appeared to have spoken about European women’s bodies while saying English women “don’t care” and “just walk around with their fat bellies and odd shapes pushing a pram at 16 in their PJ’s”.
...
Separate posts attributed to the same account appeared to show Kenyon expressing strongly anti-abortion views. One 2019 post said: “I agree totally with the anti abortion stance, it’s legalised killing of babies.” In another, the account said women seeking abortions were “deciding to kill a baby inside the womb” and described many abortions as being for “vanity purposes like unwanted pregnancies”.
A later post from Kenyon’s now-deleted X account, dated June 2022, said: “Life begins at conception. Abortion is the cowardly act of murdering a defenceless baby.” The same post added: “They don’t want babies? Use contraception.” "

He'll still make a battle of it, but they're making this a lot easier for Labour, rather than sticking up their usual local Tory defector that can speak a bit on camera.

Labour need a candidate to win a by-election to challenge Starmer for leadership, he isn't even currently an MP. Is there a bigger joke in UK politics than the current Labour party.
