"A prominent member of the Social Democrats claims she has been wrongfully suspended by the party for raising concerns about sexism and lack of diversity in the party.
The suspension of Karen Sugrue has drawn criticism from two Limerick councillors.
Shane Hickey-O’Mara, a Soc Dems councillor for Limerick City North, emailed fellow party members last month to say that Ms Sugrue’s suspension last November had been “absolutely devastating” for himself, other branch members and for fellow Limerick City West councillor Elisa O’Donovan.
He said all “are incredibly upset by the way it’s been handled”.
“I don’t say this lightly, but I have been really considering leaving the party as a result of the impact all of this is having on my mental health.
“If it hadn’t been for the support of my council colleague Elisa, who has convinced me to stay, and a few of our branch members, I would have left by now — as my sense of trust and safety is gone,” he wrote.
Mr Hickey-O’Mara said he never expected treatment like this from the party he had been a member of for over six years.
Ms Sugrue, the suspended Soc Dem member, is co-chair of the Together for Safety group, which campaigns for safe access zones around family planning centres, and of Mammies for Trans Rights. She had also been the treasurer of the Limerick city branch of the Social Democrats."
