Is Cork an Accessible City?

Was trying to get to the train station yesterday morning in the midst of marathon road closures. I couldn't get beyond Albert quay so parked up off Anglesea Street. Unloaded the kids, put the small one in the buggy and walked to the train station.

From the Horgan quays entrance we got the lift down to basement level. Walked across to the next lift which was out of order. No big issue we were able to lift the buggy up the next flight of stairs. Off to Fota with us for a great half day. The kids had a great time it really is one of the best attractions in Cork for the under 12's

On the way back we needed to cross the tracks to get to the platform which served the return journey to Cork. Again we had to carry the buggy up the metal stairs across the over pass and down the other side. I guess if you have mobility issues or are wheelchair bound the only way to get the train to Cork from Fota is to board it to Cobh and stay on it for the return journey?

On landing in Kent we again set about leaving the station towards Horgan's quay. This time the lifts on both sides were out of order. No Biggie again herself and myself had no real issues lifting the buggy up and down the stairs.

It just got me thinking what if we weren't able bodied or had a child in a wheelchair, yesterday would have been a god awful day for us. How hard it easy is it for people with mobility issues to get around our City and access public transport?

As a city should we be doing better?

First off anyway, i think in this day and age, that nothing should be allowed that causes that much hassel in a built up area like that bloody marathon
Pandering to the minority as usual, if these people want to compete on roads, the fuck off out the country and close roads out there for them.
As regards the lifts in the train station, I bet IE use the cheapest contractor so that probably means the lifts won't be back in action until after this weekend.

Just how old are you? That’s a seriously impressive level of crankiness 🤣

I wouldn't have any issues with the road closures for the marathon or the athletes. It's just they appeared to be blanket closures of the Lower Glanmire rd and Horgan's quay for most of the day with little information available. I've been involved in cycling events and 5k's etc. and usually it would be rolling closures and partial or no closure of roads apart from the start or the end.

That's fair enough.
But i firmly believe that if that bloody marathon is continually on city streets that the participants should be told that they need to be at various points by certain times as those roads are being reopened at that time to normal service

Online maybe but little or no information on alternative routes etc. no signs on the actual streets as to when they would reopen that I saw.

I did meet a Bean Garda by the City Hall that suggested I should go to the north ring road via the tunnel to get to the train station. I'd say she's the type that would use a sledge hammer to crack a wall nut.
Sorry for being a smart arse here. The train station is 15 minutes walk from City Hall…

AHH, that's because of being a cyclist.

Just take that on the chin and move on..
