Was trying to get to the train station yesterday morning in the midst of marathon road closures. I couldn't get beyond Albert quay so parked up off Anglesea Street. Unloaded the kids, put the small one in the buggy and walked to the train station.
From the Horgan quays entrance we got the lift down to basement level. Walked across to the next lift which was out of order. No big issue we were able to lift the buggy up the next flight of stairs. Off to Fota with us for a great half day. The kids had a great time it really is one of the best attractions in Cork for the under 12's
On the way back we needed to cross the tracks to get to the platform which served the return journey to Cork. Again we had to carry the buggy up the metal stairs across the over pass and down the other side. I guess if you have mobility issues or are wheelchair bound the only way to get the train to Cork from Fota is to board it to Cobh and stay on it for the return journey?
On landing in Kent we again set about leaving the station towards Horgan's quay. This time the lifts on both sides were out of order. No Biggie again herself and myself had no real issues lifting the buggy up and down the stairs.
It just got me thinking what if we weren't able bodied or had a child in a wheelchair, yesterday would have been a god awful day for us. How hard it easy is it for people with mobility issues to get around our City and access public transport?
As a city should we be doing better?
