Irish Rail

Train left Dublin at 5pm. Limped into Sallins at 5.30. We had to wait until the Tralee train came along. Nowhere to sit and my friend has mobility issues.
We eventually got onto the Tralee train at gone 6 and luckily got a seat.
Toilet was covered in vomit and next one down floor was saturated.
Got to Mallow and thankfully the connection was there. We eventually reached Kent station at 8.45.
To top it all, I was dropping my friend to the Northside and there was roadworks on Patrick's Quay, and Camden Quay was closed ?

I have a meeting in Dublin next month - decided to take the train.

Can't book a ticket beyond the 6th of December because their schedule runs from 25th August to 6th December.

What kind of dopey planning is this?! You can't book a train more than 30 days ahead because they haven't thought about a schedule since August?

Still can't book a train to Dublin beyond December 6th.

What a joke.

Very sad news, it’s the last in this season of Cranky’s Irish Rail whinges. Nothing to whinge about this morning, very few seats reserved.

Not to fear, the new season will return bigger and better than ever in January.

I live in Kilkenny and usually get the train to Dublin twice a week. Last week I needed to get to Cork from Dublin and took that train for the first time in a few years. The Cork - Dublin stock is seriously outdated compared to the rest of the country. There seems to be a status idea of using a locomotive and proper rail cars but the other intercity stock are much more uptodate and are more comfortable. If you have a window seat you can actually put both feet on the ground. You don’t need a full plug to charge your phone. Even if you want to lie against the window it’s quite easy to do it. I realised those things aren’t a given on the Cork - Dublin route. They’ll definitely need replacing in the very near future.

I totally agree. The MK4s which are used on the Cork-Dublin route are very worn, even the upholstery on the seats is ragged. I do like a locomotive but they are too slow.

As regards the legroom you’ve nailed it. I’m a short guy so I’m lucky but even if someone is sitting in front of me with a window seat I struggle for space.

Big fan of the two single seats opposite a table configuration in 1st class on some services.

Ideal for two people travelling

100%. The first class offering on the rail cars is very poor and always packed. They’re upgrading the MKIV 1st Class interior at the moment also.

Locomotive "status" is a fat lot of good when your one and only engine breaks down. At least railcars have redundancy when there's a breakdown in one engine, the whole train doesn't stop.
Anyhow, locomotives are fast becoming things of the past for passenger haulage here. When this lot are finished, they won't be getting any replacements, enjoy while you can.
