I disagree, the rest of the teams in this grade have earned their right to be there. They won their place at this level. Sars, Midleton, Blackrock, Glen and Barrs didn’t. They’re all consistently very strong in the group stage which can qualify them for a semi final but by the time they reach that grade they have lost a third of their team almost. That and you get the scenario where one club plays one version of that team in the first round and a completely different one in the third round. In fairness to those 2nd teams, the likes of Blackrock, Erin's Own, Midleton and Sars have all made finals in this grade over the last 8 years so they've stayed consistently strong throughout each championship. They've kept the quality of this championship at a high standard. They would be way too strong to be told go back down Junior so bringing them up proved to be a correct decision.
Some might say that it is unfair on first teams at this grade, but many first team clubs who are ready to win this grade, have won this grade in recent years including the likes of Lisgoold, Dungourney and Aghabullogue.
I do agree that this championship was more appealing 10 years ago when the likes of Charleville, Kanturk, Fermoy, Castlemartyr and Fr O Neills were in it. But those clubs were in huge upward curves all at that time.
Hopefully with the new system in place the last few years where the new Premier Junior champions are promoted and the likes of Mallow being relegated will keep this grade ultra competitive.
I’d be more lenient if they had reached this stage the same way the other clubs had like Erin’s Own second team but I think we are beginning to facilitate the makings of super clubs.
If these second teams are as good as you say they should have reached this level off their own ability, they can’t because they are consistently weaker when the knockout stages are played.
