Interesting article about concussion in rugby

Exactly.

We had a physio try reiki healing once.

That was fucking hilarious.

When you get to the end of the season, it's not whether or not you're injured, just how serious it is.
In Ice Hockey the injury reports when a team is eliminated make for hair raising reading.

Before:
Player has a lower body injury

After:
Player has been playing on a broken leg for 6 weeks

Kevin Sinfield is coming to Cork to raise awareness for MND specifically around ex munster player Paul Derbyshire

The Cork leg will see him cover more than 42 kilometres, starting from Red FM Studios in Bishopstown at 7.40am, and finishing at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh around 1.30pm.

The public are encouraged to line the route, cheer on Kevin, and show support. For safety reasons members of the public cannot join the run.

A lot of HIAs in the Leinster v Munster match. Larmour defintely the worst. Who'd want their kids to get involved in that?
Yep there too many cases popping up to be ignored…read something a while back about Chabal suffering amnsesia and has no recollection of ever playing rugby at 47……then again he was never a afraid of going at it…

They're automatically triggered by smart mouthguards nowadays, which can lead to false positives, Prendergast & Beirne came back on after passing theirs.

Only McCarthy and Larmour failed theirs,

I'd prefer false positives to missing serious impacts.

Chabal was part of the worst hit generation, with professionalism bulking up players but no awareness of the risks and absolutely no mitigation.

We're too early to know the impact of the changes introduced a decade or so ago.

That said, I reckon Sexton is in big trouble over the next decade. I'd be surprised if he hasn't been impacted, the number of concussions he experienced and how long he played.

If that happens you could see the number of kids taking up rugby drop dramatically. He would have been the face of rugby for people who will now be parents of kids deciding which sport to play.

Having played a few years of Junior B football and J2 rugby I would say that at that level Rugby is the safer sport. or at least the difference isn't as clear cut as people may believe

Even at that level 20 years ago now the protection players got from refs in rugby far exceeded that for GAA.

In GAA the liklihood of a player getting blindsided in the air is much higher those hits where the head whips backwards and/or hits the deck are desperate.

I do think HBB is spot on. There will be some very sad stories from some very high profile players who were pros for the Munster/Ireland/Leinster rise in the 2000s coming to the fore In the next few years.

The GAA would want to be paying closer attention too.

My brother is heavily involved in Juvenile rugby in Limerick the dual effect of Hurling being fashionable/successful and parents concerned about concussion has already had a major impact on youngsters taking up the sport. This will have a bigger impact down the line because kids won't have build up the training reservoir of hitting and being hit in a safe manner so concussions become more likely If they take it up as older teens or adults

I'd be more surprised if he doesn't.

He had 4 concussions in a year back in 2014, leading to a 12 week break. There were calls back then for him to retire for his own sake as he had a history of concussion.

The fact he played for another decade, with a bunch more concussions, really wouldn't help.

And there have been times when it has been pretty controversial, such as in 2022, when he failed a HIA, and despite new protocols being announced but not yet fully implemented saying players should be rested for 12 days, he was rolled back out again the next weekend.

I think he'll need to be very lucky to be able to remember his grandchildren's names.

He spend the first month of those 12 weeks vomiting repeatedly

BOD is another likely candidate for this. He played like a backrow for a lot of his career

Jesus, I didn't know that. Where did you hear that?

You need to do a fucking hell of a lot of damage to your brain to do that. I've heard of concussion causing vomiting for a day or so, but never longer than that.
