Interesting article about concussion in rugby

you would think by now the players would know enough and be brave enough to pull themselves from squads after concussions
Nah sure your man Underhill was basically getting a concussion every couple of games last season and he came out and said he won't stand himself down and doesn't care about the repercussions.

They need to be dragged out of their own way

Stumbled on this forum. Very interesting stuff. Would not know much about rugby but can anyone tell me my suggestion that scrum caps should be mandatory for all players. Would that be hard to enforce and frowned upon? Surely it would reduce concussion rates drastically.

Scrum caps have generally been shown to be ineffective at protection against concussion. There might be some effect, but if so, it varies between studies (e.g. this one says they're good at reducing the sort of impacts that cause concussion, this one said there's no reduction in concussive risk*), it's marginal at best.

Personally wore one from my late teens till I retired, but that was to protect against cauliflower ears, which started to become an issue when I was younger. Was definitely effective for that. I'd take a marginal improvement too, but it's probably not worth making them compulsory.

*to get pedantic, it's thought that concussions can occur with relatively light head impacts, so reducing the impact by half fundamentally doesn't change it by enough to make a difference.
