Immigration Thread

Hmmm, looks like Mary Lou has been reading the last few pages here.

Soundy gone undercover and reporting back in 🥸

Couldn't agree.

The myopia of current political discourse has anyone that isn't left of centre labelled as far right.

There's no longer any middle ground. It's completely ridiculous and typified by the likes of Daragh O'Brien castigating Carol Nolan in the Dail for expressing opinions his own party adopted less than six months later.

The 'far right' have no popular support. It's a handy catch all for anyone who goes against the party line on immigration.

I'd spend less time worrying about the far right and more why the current Government think they can railroad through policy that a majority of the electorate don't want.
The far right nutjobs might gain some traction in the Dublins northside but outside of there no.
I think Aontu has got my vote this time around. I'm not fully on board with their policies. I'm not anti abortion but I'm against any further abortion policy loosening.
However their immigration policy is spot on and they are a realistic small party that could go into power with FF and FG.

Snap.

Tobin strikes me as about the only current Irish political leader with a shred of integrity.

Unfortunately that has been the route the Left in general have gone down. Silly, childish, student style politics. When you go so far to he left you end up on the right, as they say.

In the SF thread Soundy was pawning me off while I was highlighting the base SF support don't want uncontrolled immigration. At the time of East Wall, Tommy Gould was on the Late Debate on Radio 1 saying lets not turn this into a political debate. Au contraire! Leaders lead, and SF did not on that occassion.

Apparently Donald Trump was unelectable first time round. I'd hold off on deciding what people support in the privacy of their own heads/election booth. We are on the road to having European-esque FR politics. We are just playing catch up in the same way we are with diversity, albeit at a faster rate than our Continental cousins.

So you're saying every major opinion poll since the turn of the year that's explicitly stated people are unhappy with government handling of immigration is off?

Going on about Trump misses the point entirely. He got in largely as he said he would toughen up on immigration and ditch leftist politics

How was the question put in those polls?

If it was as simple as "are you happy with the government's handling of immigration?" - then the answer could be yes from 2 people who hold totally different opinions on the issue. Yes because we have open borders, fakeugees etc. etc. or yes because the government hasn't clamped down on the far right and thrown them all in a purpose built prison in Spike!!

It is a difficult one to navigate for politicians as there are a lot of opinions and I doubt if those opinion polls actually help in formulating policy one way or the other.

You misunderstood me. I was replying to the statement that the Far Right have no popular support. I think they do, it's just silent and will show at the next elections.
