What’s it hoping to achieve?

Do you think having statistical data of different crimes being committed and by who could help law enforcement with investigations.

For example if they arrested a large number of French people in Blarney for selling drugs over a particular timeframe could this help with an investigation that Blarney might have a problem with a French drug gang?

I was speaking with a prison officer from Cork prison last Friday, he told me there are 27 inmates currently in Cork prison on remand awaiting trial for sexual crimes, 7 of them are Irish born, now I have no way of verifying if that is true or not outside of believing him as I know him and he has no reason to lie to me but without the data I can’t be 100% sure.

I’ve yet to hear any sort of argument put forward by the Gardaí that the lack of published nationality of convicted criminals is preventing them from doing their jobs.

Their intelligence and evidence based policing approach would be well aware if there was a French drugs gang operating in Ireland.

And even still, let’s say that 100% of people who burst a balloon in the early of an 80 year old in the street thus causing a fatal heart attack are from Suriname. What does knowing this actually mean? Racially profile people from Suriname? A general warning to the population that Surinamese people are not to be trusted?

I wouldn’t be the biggest fan of Ken but this is most welcome.

We seem to record data for everything in this day and age, why would anyone be against having as much details as possible on crimes being committed and the criminals behind them?

Of course they should. They wont as it's easier to pretend we are not experiencing the same surge in violent crime by MENA immigrants as every other other country who compiles statistics is.

Just to be clear are you against the nationality of convicted criminals being recorded and if so why?

It's a fairly standard procedure across most developed countries, it seems insane to me that people want Ireland to be an outlier in this regard.

Ultimately people who aren't committing crimes should have nothing to fear.

That’s not true though. Let’s look at policing in the US for example, a significant portion of officers there show their biases against black men in particular. If we were to start compiling and reporting on nationality then our Gardaí would need to undergo significantly anti-bias training on an ongoing basis.

The US is completely different to Ireland so that doesn't stand up.

Why not compare a similar northern European country like Denmark, Norway, Germany, Holland?

But we’ve posters here saying we are not different to everywhere else? We can’t have it both ways.

What part of 'the same problems as experienced in other EUROPEAN countries' are you having trouble with?

The U.S. has it's own unique history and problems with race relations.

Firstly the gardai aren't armed or have a history of killing innocent people, you might aswell be comparing Ireland to Zambia as the US, lets keep the comparison apples to apples, does northern European country like Denmark, Norway, Germany, Holland have this problem?

Again I have to ask. What’s the problem that’s going to be solved by doing this?

Immigration status , A conviction may affect a non-citizen's visa/residency status or eligibility for deportation.

Also Governments use demographic data to study crime patterns, evaluate policies, allocate resources, and understand the needs of prison populations.
