Personally, I think the EU in general, and Ireland in particular, have been seen as a soft touch for many years by people chancing their arm. As I've said many times before, if you're a genuine case and you're approved to be an immigrant to this country then you should have all your entitlements lavished on you. But if having gone through the legal processes you're deemed not to be a qualifying immigrant then I'm sorry but you'll have to leave.
And as for this "only 20% of those told to leave our shores have actually left". They should be hunted down and forcibly removed in the hope of discouraging other chancers from trying their luck.
If you're looking to blame someone for people having to be deported to a third country, then blame the illegal immigrants who are screwing up the system for everybody without a scintilla of sympathy for genuine refugees.
I listened to that interview as well this morning. Good and bad from both of them. From what I could gather if the vote passes, which it has, then it is up to each country if they want to use hubs. Andrews made the point that the cost for an individual refugee in a hub is €250k and that they are inhumane. He made the point that the system should be properly resourced including deportations but his answer on what to do with people whose home country won’t accept them was very vague.
